Curing/Drying Marijuana

Curing is a VERY important part of growing marijuana. Curing happens when you slow dry the weed as slow as possible. When you do this a form of fermentation happens. This causes chlorophyll and some sugars to brake down making the finished marijuana softer to smoke - the process also: IMPROVES THE POTENCY OF THE MARIJUANA.

How Does Curing Improve My Marijuana?

The breakdown of the sugars and chlorophyll together with the fact that the marijuana has been thoroughly flushed before harvest makes the marijuana taste much more intense and the salts, sugars and chlorophyll is what makes you cough your lungs up. Weed that makes you do this even works less on you also because of the fact that you can not inhale 100%. All those extra things in your marijuana also makes the marijuana very hard to burn - well cured marijuana burns very nicely in a joint - or whatever delivery method you use.

Does Marijuana Really Get More Potent From Curing?

Oh yes - during the curing process something else happens. Some cannabinoids break down into THC, so you actually have MORE THC AFTER STORING.

This Is How You Cure Marijuana

1: Flush For 10 Days Before Harvest

Make sure to flush your weed before harvesting it! Read this article about flushing.

2: Do Nothing But Hang The Plant Upside Down

Hang the whole plant upside down in darkness in a cold place (like a basement) or whatever place you have available. The rule is to keep the plant in as big a piece as possible, but i cut it into maybe 2-3 parts if its a big plant. Leave all the leaf on the plant for now. The leafs help to protect the bud and makes it dry slower and cure more. Make sure there is some ventilation to prevent mold. If you find mold remove bud and generously around and discard. If mold appears you might have too little air flow - you can use a blower of some kind for more ventilation.

3: When Fan Leafs Are Crisp Remove

When your fan leafs are completely dark green and crisp you remove them. Now you have the buds on and all the smaller leaf. It can take anything from 1-4 weeks for the fan leafs to be this dry. 4 weeks is off course better - Hang up the marijuana again for another week or so to dry.

4: When Bud Feels Dry Trim

After a week or two of drying after removing the fan leafs the smaller leafs have dried and the outer shell of the bud feels dry. Now you trim all the excess leaf off (and save it for cannabutter, vape or smoke). You want to remove almost all leafs. Some strains have a lot of leaf in them and you can't remove everything. The fine trimmings from bud will be almost as potent as the bud itself.

5: Put Bud In Air Tight Jar

After the fine trimming the bud is ready for the last part of the curing process. You want to use completely air tight jars - like glass jars. For this first process we want to just put it in there with no pressure or compacting. Close the jar - put in a dark and cold place for 24 hours and open the jar. The marijuana should have now started sweating and outside is no more crisp. This happens when the moisture from the middle of the plant evens out in the whole bud. Leave the jar open for a couple of hours. If it's very wet and you have fog on the glass jar - take out all the bud for some hours. Place on a paper until it feels dry again - back in the glass jar.
When the jar has been open for some hours marijuana should start feeling dry again and it is time to close the jar and put back in the dark and cold place.

6: Repeat Stuff From Step 5 Untill Smokable

You just repeat the steps until your marijuana is dry enough to smoke well. There shouldn't be black hard ash after litting - all should become fine fluffy ash.
7: When Smokable SAVE IT!!!
This is the hardest part, because at this point your weed will already be way better than anything you'll find on the streets. But storing your bud in a couple of months (2-12 months) will greatly improve taste and potency considerably.

Hope this helps you improve your curing skills to smoke or vape some better marijuana.
